Small World

This happened a couple of weeks ago, but for those of you who haven't heard, a "lost" tribe was photographed on the Brazil/Peru border that has never had contact with the outside world. Survival International says that "more than 100 uncontacted tribes remain worldwide, with half living in Brazil or Peru." Due to unlawful logging practices, they "are in grave danger of being forced off their land, killed and decimated by new diseases."

This photo blows me away. I don't know what to think, as it overwhelms me. The world is getting so small, but to be honest, I didn't know that it was still large enough to include these people. In their plight there is great sadness and great hope for all of us, I think, depending on how you look at it.

Yeah, crazy. I'm filled with questions. First, why are two of them orange and the other one dark black? They're reminding me of the aliens from "Earth Girls Are Easy." Secondly, this is apparently one of the first times they've seen aircraft before. In all the photos, they are looking up and seemingly shaking sticks at the sky.

Of course, I'm reminded of Star Trek and their prime directive about not fucking up other cultures, and their rules for "first contact." Obviously we've already contaminated their culture. The next thing we know, they'll invent whole religions around big silver things flying in the sky.

It's so crazy that such isolated tribes still exist.

I thought those were bows, but I guess sticks make sense too. Craziness! Although it would be kind of fun to have full body paint be a part of your clothing... for a day or so...

They are ready to cut anyone's ass who gets on their land. That's awesome. I wish them the best.
