Yo Majesty at DC9 Sunday

Club Action by Yo Majesty

Last night’s Black Light party at DC9 probably would’ve been a good primer for this Sunday’s Yo Majesty show at the same venue. Or you could just listen to Queen Latifah’s Black Hand Side, Salt n’ Pepa’s I’ll Take Your Man, some Fanny Pack, 69 Boyz, Outkast . . .

But really, as their party hit Club Action declares, fuck dat shit—you have to just get off your lap top, Pandora, Lastfm, Pitchfork, etc. and go to the fucking show. This dyke duo from Tampa had me at hello with their Prince-sampling Kryptonite Pussy. If you need more convincing, read Zack’s entirely quotable interview over at the Blade, otherwise, see you on the dance floor this Sunday.

Film Screening: Transparent

Years before the pregnant man hysteria was blowing up the checkout aisle or polarizing debates with seemingly progressive friends, Jules Rosskam made Transparent, a documentary film that follows the lives of about twenty transmen who gave birth to their own children either prior to transitioning, or in midst.

The film will have you weepier than a Rosie Cruise doc, and deeply explores how queer families renegotiate parental roles, particularly for these trans parents who are both mother and father to their children.

After the hour-long film screens, the folks from DCATS will run a panel discussion with area trans men that've given birth.

Do it: This Sunday, May 18th, 5-7 p.m. at 1810 14th St. NW.

Bonus: Jules Rosskam is calling for submissions to his queer film fest.

Saturgays in the Park

TNG Fan Aaron Riggins has taken our message one step further. He's gone out and organized something new: Saturgays in the Park. His idea? Get a bunch of homos together in a beautifully landscaped park on Saturday afternoons to hang out, socialize and do something new. And once per month there's a special activity. He's using Facebook, which has turned itself into quite the viral marketing tool, to promote his event.

The first event is this coming Saturday, May 17. The special activity: croquet. So dust off your white shorts and pastel polos, because we're going high-class here. Want more information about this Saturday's event, check out the event description. Want to hear about upcoming events? Join the Facebook group.

Personally, hanging out in a park on a Saturday afternoon sounds like a great time. Fill it with a bunch of homos who are discreetly drinking... I might start to get a little leery. I am planning on stopping by this weekend, after my Saturday morning bike ride.

For those of you without access to Facebook, the event description is copied below the fold.

Facebook group description
:
Do you ever find Dupont Circle park a little too crowded and/or heterosexual? When you find yourself not able to make it to Rehoboth for the weekend, but need a little sun, just skip over to Meridian Hill Park.

You are invited to come every weekend of the month, but one weekend of each month will offer a special activity. An annoucement about this weekend will be sent out in the weeks preceding.

Gather your friends, your blankets and your picnic basket and join DC's new breed of homos for some fun in the DC sun. Everyone is not ENCOURAGED TO CREATIVELY DISGUISE at least one of the following: a thermos or other opaque container for holding liquid containing Mimosas, Bloody Marys, 40s, bottles of Wine/Vodka. You are also not ENCOURAGED to bring a supply of Solo cups or other opaque personal consumption container.

I look forward to seeing everyone there.

From the Facebook Event Page for Saturday, May 17:

Thank you everyone for all the excitement and interest over Saturgays in the Park. Within 24 hours of creating the group, more than 100 people had joined. Now, we are quickly approaching 250 members. Weather-permitting, this Saturday should be fantastic.

Upon walking in the dreary rain to the metro this morning, I saw a sea of umbrellas bobbing up and down toward Dupont Circle. All I could think about was how the scene would change this weekend. With everyone’s participation we can create a sea of gays with their friends and canines spread out across the lawns of Meridian Hill Park. Think Seurat’s “Sunday in the Park”, but it’s Saturday and it’s mostly gay men.

The activity of this month will be a jolly game of croquet. Recommended attire: think British Royalty in the spring (or at least dress in as much white clothing as possible, please think of the hilarious photo-op!).

This month’s Saturgays in the Park will begin at 1:00 pm. The first game of croquet will start promptly at 2:00 pm. Participation in the game is by no means required, but should be lots of fun.

Gather your friends, bring your blankets, pack your picnic basket, or just stumble over from brunch. And remember, you are not ENCOURAGED TO CREATIVELY DISGUISE your favorite libation and bring extra cups.

Saturgays in the Park, Saturday May 17th, 1 to 5 PM, Meridian Hill Park, 16th and Florida NW.

Friday: Bike to Work Day

Gas prices are going through the roof, transit fares have gone up (unless you take the bus and use SmarTrip), climate change concerns are keeping us up at night... What are we to do?

Well, for one, you can stop relying on fossil fuels to move your lazy butt around town. The easiest, fastest and healthiest way to do so would be to bike to work. And what a better time to start than now. It's finally truly springtime, the pollen count is down thanks to all that rain we just had, and tomorrow is Bike to Work Day! Experienced cyclists and newbies alike are getting excited about jumping on their bikes and riding en masse to Bike to Work Day events around the region. If you have a bike and work within 4 miles of your house, you really have no excuse not to ride to work tomorrow. (I bike to work 3.5 miles in my work clothes nearly every day and I hardly break a sweat.) Plus, there'll be free food and prizes at all the pit-stops.

You don't need to be a regular cyclist or seriously hard-core to bike to work. All you need is a helmet, a lock and the ability to cuff one of your pant legs.

The organizers of BTWD have arranged commuter convoys for those who are uncomfortable biking by themselves through the morning rush hour traffic. I usually team up with the Mount Pleasant convoy. However, I'm going to propose that we create a homo convoy: Is anyone interested in meeting up at Logan Circle at 8 AM and riding down to Freedom Plaza in a group? If so, leave a comment and/or email me. Of course, if it rains I might make other plans for getting to work.

Sunday House Show at the Girl Cave

Grease your speculums, because the Girl Cave is gonna be a hot, sweaty mess this Sunday. Queer punk locals Ingrid will be playing one of their last shows in awhile--their gaymazing drummer Ashley (also of Des Ark) is joining the legions of homos heading West. Take this opportunity to wish her well (or if you're like me, simply swoon from the back of the room.) Last time I went to a show at the Girl Cave, there was a girl guitar player with CUNT LOVE tattooed across her fingers and an improvised make-out tent called Fort-twenty. This time there'll be vegan bbq. The potential for stained lips / hands / clothing is endless. See flyer for details.

Thursday: The Burma Benefit

TNG reader "Jean" sent us this post about her benefit, and the following message: "Thank you so much for posting this to your site! I spent a great deal of time in Myanmar at the beginning of this year and have many friends there who are affected. I thank you most sincerely for helping me promote this benefit."

Burma (Myanmar) is experiencing a humanitarian crisis of epic proportions as Cyclone Nargis devastated the country last week, leaving an estimated death toll of 100,000 and more than 1 million Burmese without food, clean water, and shelter.

Suggested donations of $10 will be collected for Save the Children's relief efforts in Burma. Save the Children is one of the only organizations currently on the ground in Burma – therefore, your donation is guaranteed to reach the cyclone victims and reach them quickly. Save the Children has mobilized its large staff of 500 aid workers in Burma to respond to the emergency and deliver much-needed food, water and other materials both throughout the delta region hit by the cyclone. For more information, please click here.

In exchange for your generous donation, Lounge 201 will be offering 1/2 price specialty beers and $5 vodka drinks for our guests.

Save the Children will continue to achieve success in reaching these victims - but not without your help. Please join us in supporting this important cause! Please direct any questions to shipitevents@gmail.com.

Saturday: Learn-a-palooza

Tomorrow is Learn-a-palooza, a seemingly annual community information sharing event that happens in and around Adams Morgan and Dupont Circle. The general idea is that anyone who knows something of potential interest to other people can sign up to host a seminar and teach it to whomever shows up. A pretty cool idea. This year's schedule includes possibly the most strange topic I've heard of yet: "How to Find Gay Men in the City: A Fag Hag's Guide to DC". I would have thought this would be taught by the woman who posted Grid Skipper's "Handy Guide to DC Fag-Hagging", but it appears to be someone else. Other sessions of potential interest are listed below the fold.

Thursdays: Karaoke at Phase 1

This post was submitted by Meaghan, who has a penchant for crafts, cooking, organization and party planning.

Hey Queers (especially the ladies)!

I don't want to hear it! I had a nice long chat with the manager of Phase 1 the other night, after I recovered from a wild night of karaoke and Jack Daniels, and we both remain perplexed...

Why the hell aren't people coming out to Karaoke night at Phase every Thursday?

We don't get it. The people who do manage to stroll in love every second of it. There are brave souls who wander in single and charm the pants off the crowd (and maybe even a lucky lady), rowdy regulars who hog the mic a little (but never fail to entertain), and hilarious folks who pick the most ridiculous songs and sing the hell out of them. How could you resist?

So I implore thee, this Thursday or one in the near future, take a nap after work and then jump in the shower. Warm up the vocal cords, like I do by screeching "Hot Blooded" by Foreigner to your bath product audience, or whatever suits your fancy. Put on your most comfortable jeans and a vintage 70s band t-shirt or a boa or even a cowboy hat, and head on down to Barracks Row. Even if you don't muster up the courage to say hello to a new friend or get on stage and sing some Duran, Duran you can be confident that you'll leave the bar ridiculously pleased with your experience and ready to tell all of your friends about it.

So get out to PHASE 1 tomorrow night, pick a few songs, and rock the hell out. We'll be there to cheer you on and to put our lighters up.

Phase 1 is located at 525 8th Street SE, just two blocks from the Eastern Market metro stop (orange & blue lines).

Recap: BYT Re-launch Party

From John at BYT:
Thanks guys. We had a tremendous party (still counting, but I think we had at least 1,300 folks through).

Ben did a great preview. Robert managed to make it to the only respectable portion of our evening early in the night (and then return later on for the debauchery). There were good number of queer guys/gals...so thanks so much for the promotion. I even saw some M4M missed connections from the party on Craigslist.

I don't know if you guys are doing a review/write-up, but if you are feel free to use any picture of mine. I'm running out of town today, but I will try to post some new ones later.

You can view some pictures here.

You guys are the best,

John Marble

Ms. Cavanaugh Presents: A Ladies Happy Hour

Ladies, are you having trouble meeting other women in the city? Me too.

After reading the recent posts lamenting the difficulty of meeting other lesbians, I decided to throw a happy hour, so we can meet each other in a stress-free zone. The event will be on Tuesday, May 13, at Red Derby in Columbia Heights, from 7-9 p.m.

I'll be showing up alone, so don't feel awkward if you don't have a friend to drag along. The point of the happy hour is that after this, we'll be able to go to events at Phase 1 or other venues and know a lot of the other women there.

I created a Facebook invite so I can keep track of who's coming and so I know who to look out for.

Oh and Red Derby is cash only, though there's an ATM in the bar.

Email me at mscavanaugh@thenewgay.net if you have any questions, but otherwise I'll see you there!

Saturday: BYT Relaunch Party

This Saturday night, BrightestYoungThings.com is throwing a giant relaunch party to celebrate its soon-to-be repolished site. DC's nightlife website wants to make sure that there are lots of New Gays in attendance. "We need more gays in the make-out teepee," says John, BYT's alt-gay correspondent.

The event does feature a make-out tepee, a free shot confessional booth, artwork (its being held in part to preview Artomatic), live bands and numerous DJs. The cover is a suggested donation of $10, plus a cheapish cash bar. Its being held in a massive empty office building one block from the NY Avenue Metro.

Brightest Young Things chronicles DC's alt-nighltife scene including concerts, fashion events, artists and even TNG parties.

The run-down:

Tonight: Smart Ass Trivia Night @ Nellies

Fans of the Amy Sedaris show Strangers with Candy were no stranger to the answer to last week's question. We asked you: Jerri Blank accidentally kills her new popular gal-pal Poppy Downs by giving her an overdose of what homemade drug?

And the answer is...

Poor Poppy took so much "Glint" that she thought she was a bumble bee and tragically killed herself while attempting to dive through a keyhole on a door in an effort to "get back to the hive."

Before this week's question, a quick shout out to the brave soul who came out to make up the Strangers With Candy 'pick-up' team last week. We really want to see this idea take off, so if you don't have a team to play Smart Ass with, don't let that stop you - come on out and join in the fun! I'd love to get some feedback on the Sw/C concept too - do you think it's worth trying?

This week we're taking you out to the ball game with a little sports trivia. Butch it up kids! Here you go...

Q: What is the cultural significance of Jackie Mitchell striking out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig back to back in 1931?

Bring your answer and show us what a Smart Ass you are tonight!

Tonight: Smart Ass Trivia Night @ Nellies

Andy over at Smart Ass Trivia Night at Nellies keeps us guessing this week with another preview question.
Last week's trivia question was a bit of a softball, but it was so appropriate for the DC holiday that I couldn't resist. We asked: What recording artist encouraged you to "emancipate yourself from mental slavery"?

Read on for the answer...

It was indeed Mr. Bob Marley from his "Redemption Song". Here's what I loved about that question though. It was pretty easy, but there was still enough room for someone's mind to wander over to The Artist Formerly (and once again) Known as Prince and his 1996 album "Emancipation" when he was frequently seen with the word 'Slave' written on his face. Now, had anyone referenced Mariah Carey's "The Emancipation of Mimi" then a little part of me inside would have died.

Ok, this week we're introducing something new at Smart Ass. If you've ever wanted to join in on the trivial fun of Smart Ass but for whatever reason haven't been able to get enough people together to make up a team, then this is the week for you! We're setting aside a space for single players to meet and form a "pick-up team" if you will. We hope it will be a fun and interesting new way for people to meet - so come on out! We're calling the team "Strangers With Candy" and they're our inspiration for this week's sneak peek question.

Q: On the TV series "Strangers with Candy," Jerri Blank accidentally kills her new popular gal-pal Poppy Downs by giving her an overdose of what homemade drug?

Bring your answer and show us what a Smart Ass you are tonight!

420 Events on 4/20: Green Apple Festival, National Smoke Out, and TAINT

Fun stuff on 4/20:

The Green Apple Festival, the largest earth day event in America, will take place on the National Mall beginning at Noon. You can also check out their facebook page.

Every year 420 afficionados attend the National Smoke Out, which takes place on the mall every 4/20, but I can't find any information on it. Perhaps it will integrate with the festival. That would make sense, anyway.

Sunday night, Party-starters Karl Jones and Danny Fowler are hosting a special 420 version of TAINT with DJ CHUBBY C and DJ PEOPLES CHAMPION. More details on TAINT below the fold.

420 TAINT: DJ CHUBBY C AND DJ PEOPLES CHAMPION

DJ PEOPLES CHAMPION again brings rockin' stylings from his new Transatlantic party to the folks at TAINT Sunday, preceded by the notorious DJ CHUBBY C and his dirty gutter booty music. You'll be dancing off your Passover meal in no time.

Tonight: Smart Ass Trivia Night @ Nellies

Last week we asked you what common bond linked the bands Radiohead, Godsmack, Boys Don't Cry and Ladytron. Some of you got it right off the bat (good job Zack!) while I think some of you spent a little time on Google, but that's ok. The answer after the fold...

Answer: All of those bands were named after songs by other bands: Radio Head by Talking Heads, God Smack by Alice in Chains, Boys Don't Cry by The Cure and Ladytron by Roxy Music.

Today's question is somewhat music related again and is in honor of DC's Emancipation Day holiday.

Q: What recording artist encouraged you to "emancipate yourself from mental slavery"?

Find out the answer tonight, if not sooner.
